Wordpress vs SquareSpace vs Wix

Today we're going to dive into each of the big website builders and compare them.

We know there are so many website builders out there to choose from. Each with their own platforms, themes, pros and cons. We've picked three of the biggest options on the market to compare and hopefully shed some light on the key differences.

We've broken this down into several topics:

  1. Customisation

  2. SEO

  3. Integrations

  4. Ease of Use

  5. Pricing

Hopefully at the end, you should be able to make a more informed choice for your businesses' DIY website!

1. Customisation:

WordPress: WordPress offers unparalleled customization, allowing users to create unique websites with a vast library of themes and plugins. Its flexibility is perfect for businesses and individuals seeking tailored solutions and providing an ideal playground for those with coding skills.

Squarespace: Squarespace provides a balanced level of customization, featuring beautifully designed templates and an intuitive drag-and-drop interface. It's an excellent choice for those who prioritize design without the need for extensive coding.

Wix: Wix offers a harmonious blend of customization and user-friendliness. The platform provides a variety of templates and a user-friendly drag-and-drop editor, making it an excellent choice for users who want a custom look without the complexity of advanced coding.

2. SEO:

WordPress: WordPress boasts strong SEO capabilities and offers a multitude of SEO plugins, such as Yoast SEO, to optimize websites for search engines. Users have significant control over on-page SEO elements, making it an attractive choice for those emphasizing search engine visibility.

Squarespace: Squarespace offers built-in SEO tools that simplify the optimization process, making it particularly suitable for beginners. While not as customizable as WordPress, it provides an accessible and effective solution for SEO.

Wix: Wix includes basic SEO features, ensuring that websites can perform well in search rankings. While it may not match the comprehensive SEO capabilities of WordPress or Squarespace, it remains a viable option for businesses with less demanding SEO needs.

3. Integrations:

WordPress: WordPress has an expansive ecosystem of plugins, enabling seamless integration with a wide range of third-party tools and services. This flexibility accommodates specific integrations, making it a solid choice for diverse needs, from e-commerce to marketing.

Squarespace: Squarespace offers a selection of key integrations that cater to common requirements, such as email marketing and social media. While it may not provide the same extensive range as WordPress, it covers most essential integrations for the average user.

Wix: Wix boasts a reasonable number of integrations available through its App Market, addressing common needs for many small to medium-sized businesses. Its integrated solutions make it accessible to a wide audience.

4. Ease of Use:

WordPress: WordPress, while requiring a learning curve, offers a vast and adaptable platform. With time and effort, users can gain mastery and fully harness its customization potential.

Squarespace: Squarespace stands out for its user-friendly and intuitive drag-and-drop website builder, providing a smooth experience for users without technical expertise.

Wix: Wix is designed to be user-friendly and accessible. It strikes a balance between customization and ease of use, allowing users to create websites quickly and comfortably.

5. Pricing:

(Correct as of Oct 2023, UK Pricing)

WordPress: WordPress software is free, and costs are associated primarily with web hosting, domain registration, and potential premium themes and plugins. Costs can vary depending on choices made but offer flexibility for all budgets.

A few hosts we recommend looking into are Hostinger and HostGator.

Squarespace: Squarespace offers a straightforward pricing structure that includes hosting, making it a budget-friendly choice for smaller websites. The absence of a free plan may be a consideration for some users.

The initial and most basic plan offers a single website and a free custom domain. This plans comes in at £12/month.

The next plan up offers everything from the basic plan but, with analytics and also includes eCommerce integration with a 3% transaction fee. This plans comes in at £17/month.

The next plan up offers everything from the previous plan but with a 0% transaction fee on eCommerce. This plans comes in at £23/month.

The next plan up offers everything from the previous plan but with a ton more advanced ecommerce features, such as discount codes.. This plans comes in at £35/month.

Wix: Wix provides many pricing options from a very simple site at £7.50/month, adding features and storage space each tier up to £119/month for the all-singing-all-dancing plan.
